This webpage is in remembrance of Anne Kehoe (1929-2005), born in Galway, Ireland; died in Revere, Massachusetts, USA. It is a collection of photos from her lifetime with an accompanying - albeit spotty - biography. Each of the photographs below is clickable and will bring up a larger version of the image, which may be used for printing copies. If you would like an even larger version of any photo or have requests for other photos, or you would like to submit a photo of or story about Anne, please contact Dean at . Mention her name in the subject of the email, please.

This woman was born Anne Shaughnessy in Northbrook, a village near Ballinasloe, Galway, Ireland. She was the youngest of 5 siblings born under dirt poor circumstances. The oldest was Kathleen Shaughnessy. Second was Thomas Shaughnessy. Third was Mary Shaughnessy. Fourth was Michael Shaughnessy. Fifth was Anne. They were born within the span of about 10 years. Their mother, born Mary Hynes, died shortly after the last birth. The children were separated and put in state care. Their father, Michael Shaughnessy, ultimately entered a mens' home in Loughrea. Kathleen, the eldest, left for Belfast after finishing her state education. She later settled in Middlesbrough (Cleveland), along the Tees River in North Yorkshire, England, marrying Kenneth Gill and losing contact with her brothers and sisters. Thomas, the second child, received an education at industrial school, gaining carpenter skills, then moved to London and led an itinerant existence. He lost contact with his sisters and brother probably not by design but because of his lifestyle. Mary, the third child, kept fairly close with Anne through their early years and is discussed below. Michael, the fourth child, first moved to Australia, then to the United States with the help of Anne. He is also discussed below.
Mary and Anne moved to Dublin after their respective schooling. Here they are being caught on film by a street photographer. Luckily they're decked out in the latest fashions.
Mary met Christy Byrne in Dublin, an event that led to the altar. In this picture, however, he is posing with Anne. The photographer is probably Mary.
Even though Anne would soon leave for England to become a nanny in London, then to Ontario and ultimately to Boston, she often visited Mary after the latter became Mrs. Byrne and settled in Dun Laoghaire, just south of Dublin. Here they are at the beach.
Mary soon had a brood of 5 children, whom Anne took great delight in visiting. In this photo, the children, left to right, are Michael, Gerry, Christy, Marian, and Anne Byrne.
After the nanny job in London, which lasted a year or so, Anne was sponsored by a family in Hamilton, Ontario, and moved to Canada. I'm not sure how she knew them or what the relationship was. This was one of the girls in the family, visiting Niagara Falls with Anne.
Anne seemed to have a nanny-esque responsibility with a girl in the Hamilton family. Here they are at a photo booth, hamming it up.
Anne then moved to Boston with the sponsorship of her cousin, Betty Craffey. The Craffeys/Croffeys lived in the Ballinasloe area of Galway. They were related to the Shaughnessys through Anne's father's sister Annie Shaughnessy, a sweet lady by all accounts, who married a Craffey. Betty's niece Sheila (Craffey) Caulfield was also living near Boston and was friends with Anne. SEE FAMILY TREE.
As mentioned earlier, brother Michael came to Boston from Australia with Anne's sponsorship. She shared her apartment with him until he hooked up with his future wife Kitty, at which point he relocated to Quincy. Around this time she met her own future spouse, William Kehoe, a first generation Irish American for whom I am making a separate memorial page.
Here's an early shot of Anne and the man she would marry, Bill Kehoe.
A quiet moment of reading caught on film.
Anne's bridal shower, with unnamed office coworkers.
THE WEDDING, June 1964:
Brother Michael was bestowed the duty of giving away the bride.
Here are Anne and Bill newly joined in matrimony.
Another shot of the newlyweds.
Anne enjoyed visiting her mother-in-law in Lynn - another sweet lady by all accounts. The pooch approved of Anne. Notice the Irish colors in the throw pillows.
Anne and Bill visiting Michael Shaughnessy for a celebration of his firstborn. Left to right, Kitty's sister (twin?), Michael, Kitty, Sheila Caulfield, Betty Craffey, Bill, and Anne.
Anne was daydreaming here, or perhaps the crackers had gone stale?
Anne was working at a research lab in Mattapan in the mid-1960s. One of her workmates, a Russian whose name i know not, took a couple of well-constructed photos.
He was a photography hobbyist. This is the second shot.
Here is a weathered but representative photo of Bill and Anne from the late 1960s.
In the mid-1970s, a family dog, Cuddles, was purchased as a puppy. The mutt was a cocker spaniel - poodle mix. Here the dog has been recently bathed.
Anne had to weather the loss of her husband in 1989 largely by herself because her son was away at college during the first 6 months of their bereavement. Photos of Anne as a widow sadden your host for this reason. But as you can see here, she soldiered on. Coworker friends (such as Rose Blakley, who also lost her husband around that time) would establish long-lasting, supportive relationships. In this 1993 shot, she is reveling in her oversized praties (potatoes) acquired through an inside connection at the Chelsea Market Terminal.
Here, Anne interrupts her heavy reading regimen and humors the photographer by wiggling her head during a slow exposure.
In 2002, Anne had an exciting trek to Ireland and England, where she saw sister Mary and family for the first time in several years. Here the "leprechaun" sisters are reminiscing at Mary's home. The larger shot includes Mary's daughter, Anne Byrne.
This photo humors me because Mary looks like a Buddhist monk. Marian Byrne is providing the big smile inbetween the sisters.
Here, Anne has just met 2 of her sister Kathleen's children. June (Gill) Birkbeck is sitting at right. June's brother Howard Gill did the leg work tracking down the rest of his mother's family after she died. Kathleen had never discussed her sisters and brothers while she was alive. So the Gill children were a mystery to the rest of the Shaughnessys (and vice versa).
Howard and June drove Anne out to the west country (Galway) to see Anne's childhood friend Julia Grady. Julia married a fellow named Thomas Craffey and had 1000 children. Sheila Caulfield, who appears above, was one of them. Betty Craffey (also above) was her sister-in-law. Anne was very fond of Julia and kept contact with her throughout her life, though she hadn't seen Julia in a long, long time.
In this picture, Anne is visiting her sister Kathleen's grave in Middlesbrough, England. Howard, David, Peter, and Mickey Gill are standing with her, along with Mickey's son Christopher. Anne took an immediate shine to Mickey, who had as much contempt for George Bush as she did.
I will be adding additional photographs as I sort through them..
