This is where William Kehoe got his start - his mother Elizabeth McGovern. i never had the good fortune of meeting this kind lady, who died in the early 1970s, but if her daughter-in-law adored her, that says something! All i know at the moment is that she was born in Ireland and lived with her husband Matthew Kehoe in Lynn, Massachusetts for the last half of her life.
Bill Kehoe was the youngest child in the Kehoe family. Evidently, he had two brothers and a sister, as this photo suggests. Parents Matthew and Elizabeth stand inbetwixt their offspring.
Taken at the same time as the above photo, Bill and his older brother seem to be outside their family home in Lynn. It is approximately 1950.
Possibly the earliest shot of Bill that i have. He clearly wanted to forget whomever he was posing with, as the photo was carefully cut.
Another photo from the early 1950s. Was this the yard at the Lynn homestead?
Bill met Anne Shaughnessy in Boston around 1960 and would ultimately marry her. Here they are early on in the relationship.
Bill enjoyed large, smooth-riding automobiles. (But would he have liked modern SUVs?) This shot is from circa 1960.
A domestic scene from circa 1961 captured by Anne.
The early 1960s.
Anne was close to her brother Michael Shaughnessy in the early 1960s, and Bill became fast friends with Michael.
Bill at Michael's home in Quincy, Massachusetts.
Bill employing an exotic rotary "telephone" at Michael's.
Although they were quite friendly at the time of this shot, i find some useful body language here. Ultimately, a rift would develop between the 2 married couples. Basically, Anne felt "used" by her brother Michael ever since he came to America. On top of that, Michael's wife Kitty disrespected her and otherwise grated on her nerves. So when Kitty kicked Anne and Bill out of her house over a misunderstanding between Bill and one of her kids, Anne threw in the towel and severed relations with her brother, who disappointed her once more by remaining silent on the matter. Bill offered to make amends, but Anne had washed her hands of it. There were a couple of calls years later by Kitty, offering détente. Nothing came of it.
Bill enjoyed posing in natural vistas. An interesting contrast: the dapper dresser as nature lover.
Here are Bill and Anne on their wedding day in June, 1964. They are posing with Bill's parents.
Bill and Anne traveled to Ireland several times.
Anne and Bill and a donkey cart, circa 1968. This was probably his idea, and she enjoyed his adventurous spirit.
i have two copies of this photo and neither is documented. i can't tell where Bill and Anne are here. Perhaps New England. Perhaps Ireland.
Bill looking unusually glum, around 1970. Maybe it was his forboding about the impending polyester craze.
I will be adding numerous additional photographs as I sort through them. . .
